Community FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)



You’ve probably seen me posting updates a heck of lot the last few days and I felt it  necessary to introduce myself and let you guys know that we hear you all loud and clear! My name is K.L. Smith, but I go by ‘arctyc’ just about everywhere online. I’m the Community Manager here at Edge of Reality and pretty much serve as the “Game Designer for the People.”  We want to create a meaningful experience with our players and an unparalleled dialog between the development team and the community!  It’s been one of my missions to have more interaction with community members of our game than what most gamers may be used to from other game communities.

All that being said, here are some of the top issues and questions we wanted to address:



Matchmaking | Friend’s List | Party System


Q: What is wrong with matchmaking? Why am I experiencing long wait times?

A: Our servers have been under tremendous strain since launch.  I’m currently updating our progress on improving the stability of the network over on the Steam Forums.  Bottom line is that we were not prepared for the huge surge in playerbase in a matter of hours. We have made a lot of progress, but we are not where we would like to be just yet.


Q: Did you guys stress test the servers?

A: Yes, we attempted to get as much traffic in the game while we were in Closed Beta and Early Access.  We weren’t able to replicate the same level of population spikes that we’re currently experiencing.  


Q:  Why Is the Friend’s List offline? Is it broken?

A: That is best answered in this update.  The short answer is that the server strain is overloading our Friend’s List feature and causing it to become unstable. We are working on addressing this issue!


Q: Why can’t I consistently Party with my friends?

A: This was a design decision to relieve players in the casual playlist environment from organized “pub stomping.”  We understand that this goes against most experiences that players may have encountered with other games.  We currently allow players to Party Up in the Annihilation and vs. Bots playlist without being separated.  We are reviewing the current design on how the system currently works in the Casual Playlist, but we will make a decision that is best for the community and gameplay experience.


Team Balancing | Auto Balance


Q: Why do games start with teams unbalanced?

A: We consider the Casual Playlist to be a drop-in, drop-out kind of environment.  We don’t want to force players to stick into the games they are playing if they aren’t enjoying themselves.  The obvious penalty of abandoning games repeatedly is that you’ll never progress.  The downside is that we don’t have anything in place to keep matches even when teams are outmanned.  We’re currently discussing the best ways to keep the Casual environment, “casual” without making players feel like we’re chopping off their hands.  The competitive playlist only starts matches when there are 8 players in the match.  Bottom line, we know quitters can be rage inducing and we’re thinking about the best solutions and future ranked playlists will be more strict about finishing matches.


Q: Is there a Skill-Based Matchmaking System?

A: Yes! Unfortunately this is the first time we’ve been able to test it at scale.  During Early Access, we were only able to test it among a few hundred players, so it hasn’t been refined just yet.  We’ll continue making progress on our algorithm to ensure that matches feel fair.  This includes investigating the issue we’re seeing where “the best players” in a match are occasionally being placed on to the same team after a match has ended in the same server, instead of being evenly distributed between both teams.


New Features | New Content

Q:  Will there be new characters?

A: Yes there will be new characters.  It takes us awhile to develop a character from start to finish and we just released Helga to our Early Access players right before launch.  If you have any suggestions, please leave them in the Official Thread.


Q: Will there be more maps?

A: Yes, more maps are planned! In fact, we’re considering letting our new players opt-in to the Alpha levels that our Early Access players got to experience.  Maps and characters have traditionally taken a very long time to create, but we’re hoping to cut down on the process of introducing new maps to the game.  They are a great way for players to provide feedback on the design of a map before those maps are finalized.


Q: What about game modes? Will there be more game modes?

A: We would like to add more game modes in the future. 


Q: Will You Add Player Hosted Private Servers

A: We’re considering it in the long run.  It’s not something that will be any time soon.


Q: Will Loadout be on other platforms?

A: First and foremost we have to get our PC version standing on its own two feet!  We are actively working on a Mac version of the game, but there is no ETA on when it will be complete. 


Weapons | Equipment | Gameplay


Q: Will you introduce new weapons?

A: YES! We will continue to introduce new weapon parts that introduce fresh, tactical gameplay elements.  We don’t speak of Cryo because we’re still thinking about the best way to implement the payload (it’s scary to think about), but we’ve provided some information.  We chose Loadout’s style and setting to give us artistic license to embrace whatever is most fun, rather than being limited by realism.


Q: Will I be able to customize the paint job on my weapon?

A: Yes, but we haven’t finished implementing this feature.  We’ve actually shown customizable weapon skins in the past on one of our Dev Live Streams! If you do a bit of digging, you can find a sample for yourself.


Q: Will you balance overpowered weapons?

A: Yes, we are actively looking at data, your feedback on the forums and playing the game to see what type of trends players are using that seem a little too strong.  We are also continually buffing weapon parts that seem to be underperforming.


Q: The Shield is too strong! Will you nerf it?

A: The Shield, along with all of our other Equipment pieces, are also under constant evaluation.  If you happened to check out our most recent Developer Live Stream, we confirmed that the Shield will be receiving an overhaul.


Q: When will we see new Equipment?

A: Like weapon parts, we’re trying to determine what we want to introduce into the game.  A radar jammer? Dash boots? A Shield Gun?  These aren’t necessarily going into the game, but we want you guys to know that nothing is off the table.


Q: Do I have to pay real money for weapon parts?

A: Hell no! Weapon parts can only be attained by playing the game and purchasing them with the in-game currency called Blutes which are earned after each match.


Q: Do I have to pay for cosmetic items?


A: There are cosmetics that can be granted by through the Daily Prize Boxes.  Cosmetics are primarily only purchased with Spacebux, our real money currency.
